The Weekend That Was, Part I

What to do, what to do?  Memphis in the fall is so much better than Memphis in the summer.  And even though autumn was still a few days away this past weekend, there were still plenty of choices for a two year old and his sweat-averse father.  For starters, Gram made town late Friday night for her Mother's Day gift cooking class with Mommy on Sunday.  It had something to do with sauces, and there are no photos.  All I know is whatever they did, it prompted Ginger to say, "All I want for dinner is a chocolate malt from Sonic."  I don't know what that says about the cooking class, but the weekend ended at Sonic, and everyone was happy about that.

Saturday morning brought a trip to the Memphis Farmer's Market with Kate and Meredith.  (Mr. Chris was embroiled in yet another criminal jury trial.)

It was art day at the market.  That's Walt's first art project, Potato Man, in front of his face.  Shockingly, one of his carrot legs didn't even make it to the end of the pavilion.  Whose idea was it to use root vegetables for appendages anyway?

Next was the Giant Dog Drawing Board.  I don't know the significance of a giant dog as drawing board, but it was complete with a shaggy tail.

There was also sidewalk chalk.  And some of it even made it to the sidewalk.

At the risk of jeopardizing my happy marriage and family life, I offer absolutely no commentary, nor do I suggest any opinion about the following series of photos:

And I made sure to get at least one picture of Mommy this time.  See;  I'm learning.

We shopped for our dinner and headed home for the obligatory long, Saturday nap.  Dinner was great and the rest of the day, just like the weather, was near perfect.

Be sure to check back tomorrow when we review the remainder of the weekend and discover the answer to that age-old question: "Is an air show too loud for a two-year old?"

  1. i'm interested to hear the verdict on the air show, as i'm sure i won't be able to keep chris away next year. i'm certain it's too loud for this 32 year old.
as for gram's hula hooping skills, i think she is no less than SuperGram.

  2. I certainly agree with you, Kate. Gram, I'm so very impressed. Hula hooping is one of those things I did very well years (and years and years) ago but have certainly lost the ability to do, possibly because I've gained something besides hula hooping skills. Go Gram!

  3. OK, Josh, I guess I have made you sweat enough by my lack of a response. When a Gram decides to hula hoop in public, she deserves what she gets! The weekend in Memphis was just as perfect as Josh portrayed it.
    Overheard on Sat:
Gram: Walt I love your basesall tee-shirt. I wish I had one.
Walt: Gram, baseballs are for boys!
Gram: Excuse me, Walt, Gram likes baseball, too!
Walt: Then go buy one (shirt)!
    Gram: Uh, ok.

  4. Gram,
If Walty makes a chauvanistic comment like that again ('baseballs are for boys'), I suggest using this as a comeback (Nina can even get you a shirt that says it, if need be):
Oh, yeah? Well, if softball was easy, they'd call it 'baseball.'
Sorry Walty, but you gotta be easy with tha chicks. I still love ya!

  5. Cheryl, if you can do THAT, you know the Cubs can make it to the playoffs. I am babysitting Thom this weekend, so I am not sure how many games I will actually get to see, since he has a habit of waking up at 5am. But hey if I get up then, I might get the end of the west coast games (never mind, Dodgers aren't going anywhere!)
    Have a great weekend everyone!!
