Oh, poor, poor second child. The number of posts Walt got in his first 18 months compared to Patrick is probably about 10 to 1 (and that’s being generous). Patrick, if you’re reading this someday, just know that it’s not because we love you any less or are any less fascinated by your every new word – it’s just that mommy and daddy are tired. (And also, social media has sort of moved on from blogging to Facebook and Twitter – you get tweeted a lot more than your brother does. But you probably don’t even know what those things are now – I’m sure it’s all about holograms and direct brain messaging now. That, or this blog is just a quaint reminder of the simpler days when humans told computers what to do, not the other way around. Mommy might have been reading too many magazines.)
Anyway! Patrick turned 18 months old recently and we have been woefully remiss in reporting on his every giggle, sneeze and step. So, I’m going to attempt to catch up a bit. We’re going to go with the list format today.
1. Patrick seems to be taking after his brother in the talking department. After Gram (the speech pathologist) commented that he seemed to have a good vocabulary for a kid his age, we decided to tally up his words on the kitchen chalkboard. So far, we’re at about fifty words that he says on a fairly regular basis. I’m not saying you’d always understand him, but we do, and his little old man mutterings never fail to amuse us.
2. Patrick is a pretty wary kid, so far. If he doesn’t know you well, you’re likely to get a glare, or at least a hard stare until he’s decided you’re on the up-and-up. As Patrick’s mother, I’m totally okay with this.
3. Once you’ve been approved, however, he’s about as sweet as they come. He gives out his dramatic kisses and “huuuuuuuuddds” liberally, much to everyone’s delight. When Josh gets home at night, he always gets an enthusiastic “DaaaaDaaaaa!!!!”
4. Patrick eats the following things on a regular basis: bananas (at least one, usually more, a day), yogurt (extra-thick Dora version that he can spoon up himself), applesauce, (which is also self-fed, but with a slightly lower hit rate) and quesadillas. That is all. Oh, and cookies and crackers, but I don’t think that even counts.
5. Not sure if #4 has anything to do with #5 or not, but he’s definitely on the petite side. 10th percentile for weight and 25th percentile for height. Or the other way around – can’t really remember. But he’s just now out-growing his 12-month clothes, which is sad because I really love those little green corduroy pants.
6. There will be no comments on his sleeping habits, per my long-held (well, for about six years anyway) superstition regarding writing about babies’ sleeping habits.
7. Like his brother, Patrick loves his lovies. He has Slicky (which is already well on its way to being as ratty as Walt’s original Slicky was) and Puppy, a pillow pet that he got for Christmas and took to immediately. He also still loves the pacifier, which is a little different from Walt, who gave his up early. Slicky and Paci are like cookies and milk – he can’t enjoy one without the other.
8. The kid definitely takes after his mother when it comes to reading. Like me, he would be content to hang out on the couch reading books all day long. His literary tastes tend more toward board books, but still. His favorite authors are Sandra Boynton and Eric Carle, and he also likes those inane “Spot” books, but we all have our weaknesses.
9. You know what’s really fun? Pulling all the tissues out of the box and unrolling the whole roll of toilet paper. F-U-N.
10. Patrick loves his big brother a lot, but possibly not quite as much (yet) as his big brother loves him. Which is not to say that Walt doesn’t spend most of their waking time tormenting the living daylights out of Patrick, but I figure payback is coming.
The first picture says it all about Patrick. He's as sweet, lovable and has as many adoring ways as that picture. He is so different from Walt to me, but just as precious and brings just as much joy as that first grandchild. They are both amazing little boys who are loved by so many and are so blessed to have parents who are bringing them up "in the way they should go". Nana loves you, Patrick. No matter how this message is getting to you :-)
ReplyDeletewell, as a second child myself I have to say I was a little annoyed by the disparity I found in the number of baby photos in the photo albums! however, no disparity in the amount of love so I think P will overcome it! So so sweet! Glad Macy has cousins to torment and torment her for many years to come!!
