When I arrived on the third floor of Williford dorm for my first year at Rhodes College and met Kate McQuiston and Beth Bernard, I must confess, I never imagined that someday we'd be posing for this picture. We actually took it after a lovely walk around the campus, and let me tell you, we were quite a sight.
We left in a caravan from the Bush house, which is located conveniently right outside the back gate of Rhodes. Beth pushed little Henry (almost 4 months) in his stroller, Kate pushed only-slightly-bigger Henry (almost 11 months), I pushed his brother John, and Walt pushed his dump truck. School is still in session, so there were plenty of people to gawk at our funny little parade.
It was a bit surreal to be walking around campus loaded down with four little boys, strollers, diaper bags, sippy cups, and toys, when we used to carry only our backpacks. But even the walk to Fisher Gardens for graduation was not as meaningful to me as that quick stroll with two of my best friends and our children. Even if I did end up carrying the dump truck.
This picture is priceless! I think you all should frame it right next to the picture of the three of you outside of Hallwood on graduation day! Friendship...children...memories...that's what it's all about! Uh, I think I see some broken windows in your future (all of you)!
ReplyDeleteLooks like Walt has a good base of friends before he ever reaches college. Like Gram I agree--that's what it's all about. Friends are worth it all; they'll carry you through those rough times and add to all the joyous times. Be sure to reserve spaces in that collage for those grandchildren. It won't be complete without them!
ReplyDeleteOh yes, Josh too found some great friends at Rhodes, but I'm especially thankful for that one "friend" with whom he chose to share his name!!!!!
Walty,
ReplyDeleteIt's waaaay past my bedtime, but I was having trouble sleeping so I thought I would catch up on all of my baby blogs! You look so big in this picture!!! My boys are growing up way too fast!
I miss you little buddy!
