Return of the Gymini

Img_3304

So, thanks to a small kitchen fire at the Lareaus' house (don't worry, they're all fine -- they just smell funny), we had houseguests for a few nights this week, including one Meredith Lareau, who will be four months old on Saturday.  For her entertainment, we pulled out the Gymini.  However, it was Walt who was really entertained by it.  Dangling toys!  Where have you guys been hiding this thing?!

Editor's note:  I was kidding about the Lareaus smelling funny.  Their house does smell funny, but they smell lovely, as usual.

The One Year (and a week) Post

Img_3258

I know, I know . . . there is no excuse for depriving you of pictures of the world's cutest kid (in my humble opinion) for a whole week.  I would tell you all about the illnesses, broken cars stuck in Nashville, hung juries, 30th birthday parties (yes, plural . . . we went to two this week), and just general craziness of the week, but I have a feeling you really don't care.  So I'll just get on with the one year report.

The Official Report: We went to the doctor on Tuesday for his one year check-up, but also to investigate the hacking cough and faucet-like nose that had plagued Walt for the past several days.  He did, in fact, have french fries in both ears.  (For those of you who were never a patient of my father, that means they were infected.)  So, antibiotics all around.  Which he loves.  It actually makes me a little nervous how much he loves taking medicine of any kind -- the antibiotics, Tylenol, decongestant drops, vitamins -- he sucks them all down and then looks at me pleadingly for more.   Just say no, Walty.

Anyway, other than the ear infections (and, for the record, Dr. S was quite impressed that this was only his second ear infection of his young life), all was well.  Walt weighed in at 20.5 lbs. (25th percentile) and measured 29 inches (10th percentile).  For those of you who actually remember that we reported him as being in the 75th weight percentile at his nine-month appointment (short and fat, ring a bell?), do not fret -- that was apparently an error on Dr. S's part, as she put the dot in the wrong place on the growth chart.  He was really somewhere between the 25th and 50th then, so he's growing just fine.  Just a little on the petite side for now.

As for the rest . . .

Mobility:  He is cruising around anywhere he can while holding on to either a piece of furniture, our hands, or one of his push toys.  He hasn't quite summoned the courage to venture out on his own, but I'm certainly not encouraging him too much.  I know that once he takes that first step away from me, there will be no turning back.  And I'm just not quite ready for that yet.   Sniff.

Communication:  We have a breakthrough . . . Walt is finally saying "mama"!  Just not to me.  He just kind of says it in general.  Dr. S says that's pretty normal, but still, would it kill the kid to look at me and say it?  Just once?  Cut a mommy some slack.  Other than that, his only recognizable word (and I'm not sure it really counts as a word . . . more like an exclamation) is "Uh-oh!"  Of course, I don't think he's quite grasped the subtle nuances of the word.  You know, how you're only supposed to say it when you do something accidentally.  Because I can assure you, there is nothing accidental about taking a fistful of peas, holding them out over the side of your highchair, looking your mother in the eye, smiling, and then letting them go.  But "Uh-oh!" is his proclamation every time.  Uh-oh, indeed.

Img_3275

Eating: For those of you who were concerned that we were trying to turn poor Walt into some kind of earth child by feeding him hummus on pita bread (which he loves, mind you!), you'll be reassured to know that tonight he polished off a Hungry Man-size plate of meatloaf, mashed potatoes and peas.  Of course, he did start off with an olive appetizer and finish up with a dessert of oh, about a dozen cherries (each cut into very tiny pieces by a devoted mother who still has red-stained fingers, thank you very much).  He loved the cherries (see picture) -- the only time he looked up from eating them was when he ran out  and I hadn't finished cutting up more yet.  Despite being on the bottom end of the weight chart, the kid can put away some food.

Img_3262

Miscellaneous: Walt is thoroughly enjoying all his new toys from
Christmas and his birthday (so if you haven't gotten your thank you
note yet, just know that it's on the way and that he is very appreciative).
He's very democratic about it too -- all of his toys are in the
rotation.  And I don't know if you all conspired on this or not, but
most of his new toys seem to have a farm theme.  So, if you weren't
aware, apparently a cow says, "moo", and a duck says, "quack", and
(according to Harriet and Richard's gift), a cow-duck says "moo-quack", but (and I
quote), "That's silly!".  If I've heard it once, I've heard it 732
times.  No kidding.  My friend, Kate, and I were discussing the
prevalence of the farm theme in kid's toys and found it a bit ironic
considering how few kids will actually go on to become farmers, what
with all the corporate agriculture nowadays.  But we decided that toys
with a business consultant or network engineer theme just wouldn't be
as much fun.

Walt playing "Where's Daddy?"

In summary . . . not that we're biased, or anything, but Walt is just an all-around great kid.  His teachers at church and day care are always telling us what a sweet, easy baby he is, and we must agree.  Being his parents has enriched our lives immeasurably this year and we can't wait to see what the coming years have in store.  (Probably about a zillion more pictures.)

P.S.  The official one-year picture is now in the Birthday album!

Walt Is One Year Old Today, I Say

Img_0032

Walt is a very tired one-year old this evening.  We celebrated his first birthday today at Nana and Putty's.  The guest list was long and distinguished.  Here are the highlights.  In pictures, of course.

Img_0037

The theme, if you couldn't tell, was Dr. Seuss.  Walt wasted little time diving into his green egg cake.  Alas, we couldn't find any green ham.

Img_3219

We may have a shortage of photos and video of the cake eatin'.

Img_0031

Collier was more than happy to be the motor for Walt's new vehicle, a gift from Putty and Nana.

Img_3200

Putty made balloon hats for the occasion.  Aunt Gigi sported hers from start to finish.

Img_0026

Walt, of course, preferred this box as his hat.

Img_3213

Walt got undressed for the cake eatin'.  We learned from watching cousin Collier.

Young and old enjoyed the festivities.  Here's Walt and Mommy on the sofa with Walt's two great-Grannys.

Img_3206

Although this photo was taken before it all started, the look on Walt's face sums it up.  He was a very tired little boy.  That's cousin Drew giving Walt a place to rest and a refreshing beverage.

Just Playin'

After a quick walk down to Easy Way for some sweet potatoes for dinner the other night, Walt played in the yard with Evie and Daddy.  The leaves haven't quite been raked up yet, so they were fun to bury one's legs in.

Walkin' and Rollin'

Our little (sniff, sniff) almost one-year old is (sniff, sniff) almost walking.  We'd love to be able to unveil his first steps at his birthday party next week.  Who knows, maybe it will happen.  It can't be long now.  Take a look:

Check out this toothy grin from earlier today.  Note the drool spot on the shirt.  Apparently, drool is a by-product of teeth.

Img_3158

And while we're bragging on our child's physical attributes, check out the eyes on this one.

Img_3140

That's all for this weekend.  It was a pretty slow one at the Spickler Family West compound.  Walt de-booked his bookshelf, practiced walking and bumped his head way too many times.  Not too different from other days except that Daddy was here to see more of it.  Yippee!

For the Record

P1010237

Just thought it would be interesting to note that we started our blog last year on January 5th (not that we told anyone about it until the arrival of you-know-who), and as of midnight last night, Walt's World has had a grand total of 23,766 hits.  Our numbers have definitely fallen off since those early days when everyone tuned in to see pictures of the new human and to hear tales of our ineptitude as parents, but those of you who are still around know that the pictures now are even cuter and the potential for our parental goof-ups just increase by the day!  So, here's to another happy year in Walt's World -- thanks for keeping up with us.

Saturday in the Park

Img_3128

This Saturday for a change, Walt and I took Mommy with us to the coffee shop and the park.  Walt loves going down the slide with Mommy as you can see.  But what he likes even more is swinging.

Img_3105

Img_3103

As you can see, he's graduated to the big boy swing.  No more straping into the big red kiddie version.  He loves every minute of it.

He also loves every minute of "sharing" my muffin.  And by "sharing" I mean that luckily I eat faster than him and can actually get some of it down before he gets to it.

Img_3101

All in all, we were happy to include Mommy in what's become our Saturday morning tradition.

Bonus Footage:  Here's a short video revealing Evie's safe-haven in Walt's room.  She heads there when things get especially exciting.

One Down . . .

P1010235

Happy New Year!

Despite his appearance in the above photograph, Walt got to bed well before the stroke of midnight last evening.  He is getting his first check-up of the new year from Grandaddy.  It's just routine maintenance, we assure you.  He's been a little congested lately.  Grandaddy confirmed that it was nothing to worry about.

Speaking of hair, we never filled you in on the first "official" haircut a few weeks ago.  Walt made a visit to Natilee the week before Christmas.  Natilee is in charge of Daddy's lid and formerly Hubie Brown's before he decided that he no longer wanted to coach the Girzzlies.  We don't know who cuts his hair now, but Natilee still cuts Daddy's.  If she's good enough for Daddy and the 2004 NBA Coach of the Year, she's good enough for Walty.
