Overheard 4/20/08

These two gems came within just a few minutes of each other.

Daddy:  Here you go, Walt -- take your vitamin.

Walt:  (Whining) No!

Daddy:  It'll make you big and strong like Daddy.

Walt:  No . . . (pausing to reconsider) . . . today?

Walt and Daddy are up in the attic retrieving the warm-weather clothes.

Daddy:  Look Walt -- here's a book with pictures of when Mommy and Daddy got married.

Walt:  (Looking at pictures) Where's Mary?

Off to the Races (2008 Version)

Dsc_0031

Last weekend, the Spickler fam made our annual pilgrimage to Lexington for the races.  According to my theory of every-other-year-good-weather, this year should have been sunny and warm.  But not so much.  The sky in the picture above may be pretty, but the combination of the cloud cover and the 20-mph wind all day made for a numbing experience.  Not that Walt or Collier cared.

Dsc_0017

A good time was had by most.  Yours truly was just plain cold.  Despite being dressed sensibly in pants, coat and gloves, unlike the crazy coeds in their STRAPLESS DRESSES.  How we neglected to get pictures of these insane girls with their goosebumps the size of dinner plates is beyond me.

And much like April 2006, the kiddo was cashed by the end of the day.  Still clutching his final (losing) betting ticket.

Dsc_0061

And since you're dying of curiosity, here's a construction update . . . the framing is pretty much done and the windows and doors are in!

Though even with all the work that's been going on back there, our contractor (Mr. Steve, to Walt) somehow found time the other day to sit down and read Walt's new book to him.

Dsc_0062

Think he's charging us for that?

Construction Update 4/9/08

Dsc_0004

Is there anything more boring than a blog post featuring construction update photos from someone else's house?  Hardly.  Just bear with us here.  We do this mostly for ourselves these days anyway since we apparently lost all four of our readers due to insufficient content.  I'll try to include Walt in each picture if at all possible.

As you can see the walls are framed, including those "special corner boards" that the builder said would prevent drafts, and the floor is at least sturdy enough to hold me standing still AND Walt walking.  So that's progress.

There are enough ladders in the backyard to keep Walt happy for days and his parents nervous for just as long.

And though we trust our builder (Steve the Builder, as Walt refers to him), it never hurts to do a little follow-up leveling just to make sure the window you will probably break someday is straight up and down.

Dsc_0009

And finally, there's no Walt and it looks similar to the first photo, but if you look closely you can see that as of yesterday there are now roof joists or rafters or whatever they're called.  I just know they are the start of a roof, which I am quite fond of considering how much it's been raining lately.

Construction Update 4/1/08

I believe that in a previous post, you were promised pictures of an excavator in our backyard, and we at Walt's World always (try) to keep our promises, so here you go . . .

Dsc_0007

The blurry figure in the foreground is, of course, Walt, who was quite interested in the goings-on in the yard.  Fortunately, the excavator came during his spring break and he was home with Gram and got to watch.  Very exciting for an aspiring Bob the Builder.

Dsc_0006

But for the sake of posterity, let's back up a bit and watch the transformation from pre-construction to today . . .

Oh, and heck, while we're at it, why don't we just sod the front yard too?

Dsc_0333

We'll post the after picture when the sod greens up a bit, but trust me, it looks better already.  Things are definitely shaping up over here at Walt's World.
